Thiruvananthapuram, October 18 — updated: The India Meteorological Department has placed Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod under yellow rain alerts today.

A yellow alert indicates the possibility of isolated heavy rain of 64.5–115.5 millimetres in 24 hours. Thunderstorms and lightning are also possible, and residents have been advised to remain cautious.

District warnings for the following days

  • October 19: Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
  • October 20: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam and Thrissur.
  • October 21: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram.

Tourist-site safety restrictions continue

Because rain warnings remain in force, the Tourism Department’s October 17 safety directions to District Tourism Promotion Councils continue to apply. Access must be restricted at waterfalls, dams, reservoirs and other tourist destinations linked to water bodies until warnings are withdrawn. Travel restrictions should also be imposed where necessary in hill areas vulnerable to landslides or slips.

  • Warning boards must be placed on risky roads.
  • Emergency contact numbers must be widely publicised.
  • Special 24-hour control rooms must operate until the rain warning ends.

Safety: Confirm that a tourist destination is officially open before travelling. Follow the latest instructions from district authorities, police and disaster-management officials.
