Tamil Nadu has declared Monday, 9 November 2026, a local holiday for government offices, public-sector undertakings, schools, colleges and other educational institutions across the state because Deepavali falls on Sunday, 8 November.
Government Order (1D) No. 547 of the Public (Miscellaneous) Department, dated 28 October 2026, makes Saturday, 28 November, a working day to compensate for the additional holiday. The order says the decision is intended to help students, parents, teachers and government employees travel to their home towns and return after the festival.
- Holiday: Monday, 9 November 2026.
- Compensating working day: Saturday, 28 November 2026.
- Covered institutions: Government offices, public-sector undertakings, schools, colleges and all educational institutions.
- Banks: The order is not a holiday notification under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. Bank customers should check their bank’s separate notice.
District collectors have been directed to arrange essential staffing at district treasuries and sub-treasuries for urgent government transactions.
