The Union Cabinet on November 4, 2026, approved ₹14,500 crore to support the development of 92 gigawatt-hours of new grid-scale energy-storage capacity across India.
The approval is for a viability-gap-funding scheme. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the decision during a briefing on Cabinet decisions in New Delhi.
How the capacity is divided
- Battery energy-storage systems: 30 GWh
- Pumped-storage projects: 60 GWh
- Emerging energy-storage technologies: 2 GWh
The minister said the scheme would run for five financial years, from 2026–27 through 2030–31. The combined targeted storage capacity is 92 GWh.
Grid-scale storage can hold electricity when generation is high and release it when demand rises. The decision is a funding approval for developing new capacity; it is not an announcement that the individual storage projects have already been completed.
