October 27 brings two significant anniversaries that can be verified from institutional records. No exact-date anniversary directly tied to the Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu or Kerala could be verified to the required standard, so no regional claim has been invented.
1947 — The first Indian Army units landed at Srinagar
On 27 October 1947, the first elements of the Indian Army’s 1st Battalion, Sikh Regiment, were flown into Srinagar airfield. India commemorates the date as Infantry Day. The Ministry of Defence account places the signing of Jammu and Kashmir’s Instrument of Accession on 26 October, while the troop landing occurred on 27 October. The signing date and the date of the military operation are therefore kept distinct here.

1961 — The first Saturn rocket, SA-1, was launched
On 27 October 1961, the first Saturn launch vehicle, SA-1, lifted off from Launch Complex 34 at Cape Canaveral. The 162-foot, 460-ton test vehicle reached an altitude of about 85 miles and completed a trajectory close to the predicted path. The mission tested the eight-H-1-engine cluster and the structural and aerodynamic design of the Saturn I. It was the first flight in the rocket family that later carried people to the Moon.
