A railway contract/temporary worker named Alauddin died after an Indian gaur attacked him in the railway residential colony at Coonoor in the Nilgiris on 17 October.

Reports said he worked on railway water-supply, plumbing and maintenance duties. Both news organisations reported that the gaur emerged from a bushy area and attacked him.

The Forest Department and police are investigating. Dinamalar quoted Coonoor Forest Ranger Veeramani as saying the family would receive ₹10 lakh in government compensation, with ₹50,000 as initial assistance for funeral expenses.

Verification note

The two reports differ on Alauddin’s age and on whether he died at the location or during treatment at hospital. MyNilgiris has therefore omitted those unconfirmed details.
