Nilgiris District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru has warned that unhygienic preparation or sale of sweets, savouries and bakery products ahead of Deepavali and Christmas will attract action under food-safety law.
District Press Release No. 542 was issued on 29 October 2026. It asks food businesses to ensure product quality and safety during the festive season.
- Food businesses, including temporary sweet and savoury makers and sellers, must hold a licence or registration certificate.
- Products must be prepared hygienically with quality ingredients. Adulterants and colours above permitted limits must not be used.
- Oil already used once must not be reheated for preparing food.
- The release says use of banned single-use plastic can attract a ₹5,000 fine.
- Packages should state the food name, manufacturing and packing dates, expiry date, and whether the product is vegetarian or non-vegetarian.
- Food handlers should wear gloves and head covers. Products should be kept in closed glass cases protected from flies, insects and dust.
Food-safety complaints may be sent to the Tamil Nadu Food Safety Department’s WhatsApp number, 94440 42322, or through the TN Food Safety Consumer app.
