Updated 29 October 2026: The earlier tally of 15 recaptured and two missing is superseded. Multiple reports confirm all 17 escapees were back in custody by 28 October.

All 17 undertrial prisoners who escaped from Thekkampatti sub-jail in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district on the night of 26 October 2026 had been taken back into custody by 28 October, according to The New Indian Express and PTI. The manhunt followed an escape during which a warder was allegedly attacked and keys taken, as reported by the prison authorities.

Police had used special teams and drones during the search. Earlier reporting said nine prison staff were suspended pending investigation into security lapses. Reports differ on the exact police station involved in the final surrender or arrests; this article does not assert an unverified location. This is Theni district, not Gudalur in the Nilgiris.
