Foreign ministers of the Group of 20 are meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, on 30 and 31 October 2026 amid deep disagreements over the Russia–Ukraine war, the US–Israeli conflict with Iran, US tariffs and tensions in the South China Sea, the Associated Press reported.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is chairing the meeting. Washington says the discussions will focus on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, Red Sea, Black Sea and South China Sea, alongside energy security, food security and supply chains. The meeting is intended to prepare the ground for the G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for December in Miami.

AP reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is attending despite objections from some US allies, while China is represented by a deputy foreign minister. Ukraine and South Africa were not invited. Officials and analysts cited by AP said the sharp differences could make a common position difficult.

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is attending the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and is also scheduled to take part in a Quad foreign ministers’ meeting on the sidelines. India’s Ministry of External Affairs announced the visit on 28 October.
